Portable Desk

Original Design

The original design for the portable desk was from DIS II and was designed to combat a common problem at RPI, which is too small of desks in the lecture halls. The design included a cup holder, charge brick holder, and adjustable feet. The original prototype was made of cardboard and did not work universally on a wide variety of desk types. It also lacked the ability to move away from the user while remaining stable, which I viewed as a critical flaw that made it unsuitable for use. Taking what I have learned from that prototype, I have designed a new version that should work better in all use cases and introduce some module elements to improve the quality of life this product is intended to bring.

New Design

The new design is centered around modularity, where the feet of the base can be swapped for different mounts for other use cases. This design is also built around better materials such as plywood, PLA, and metal inserts. This reinforced system will be able to support more weight and allow the desk to slide forward without the change of the center of gravity affecting the overall stability. It does this through side clips to hold onto the arm rests of a seat and through bolt holes to set the extension position. These bolt holes may also allow a user to attach straps if they intend to place large weights on the desk surface. In addition, I have added a row of standard M4 bolt holes along the front edge to support modules like phone, cup, pencil, cord, and fan holders, as well as timers, lights, added supports, and more.
