Light Switch Cover - Design Story

Original Design:

This light switch cover was created through a project in DIS II, in which we were tasked with creating a solution to a problem in our studio space. One particular problem that caught my eye was the light switch panel near the door. Prior to this project the switches had a rather crude labeling system with made it difficult to discern which switches corresponded to which function in the room (2 light switches, 1 outlet switch). To fix this I create two prototypes of a switch cover which went over the panel and gave clearer labels to the switches. The first design did not fit, but it did help me to better understand the design when creating the second iteration. This prototype was made using multi-color 3D printing (due to the size it had to be split into two parts) and used a press fit to attach to the panel. Instead of using words, I chose to use icons to make it more visually appealing as well as more accessible.

Updated Design:

The next iteration of the design (aiming for higher quality production) used different materials to make the cover not only more visually appealing, but also more user friendly. Instead of 3d printing the entire thing, I chose to make the face out of basswood (1/16", laser-cut) and mount it in a 3D printed framed. By doing this I drastically reduced the thickness of the face which in turn makes the switches easier to operate. An added benefit of this production method is that the logos can be engraved onto the face with a laser cutter. This upgrade in precision meant I was able to create much clearer symbols, again improving the usability.
